contrary to the name, this is not a set for a movie or an attraction for tourists, but wine cellars and a vivid example of how the landscape of a certain area changes depending on the occupation of its inhabitants.
The Hungarian region of Tokaj, home to the Gombos Hill wine cellars, has been known for its wines since Roman times. And Louis XIV made Tokay wines the main drink served at the Versailles court. This quality was achieved by local winemakers thanks to the preservation of traditions. Winemaking is so important to the inhabitants of the region that it has even changed its landscape – on farms, in villages and in small towns there are a lot of deep wine cellars carved by hand in rhyolite rocks. Given the importance of these buildings for the development of the region, in 2002 UNESCO declared the Tokai region a monument of folk architecture and inscribed it on the World Heritage List.
